Buying and Replacing Baseboard Registers

Baseboard Registers

The best heating system is only as good as its final conduit, which in modern home effectively comes down to a properly grouped set of  baseboard registers.   Also known in the market as floor vents, these simple but useful devices will direct the flow of heat into a room and throughout the home in the most efficient way, which helps save on energy costs.  With registers in all rooms the heating system can operate the way it was intended.  When vents cease to provide their important function it’s time to consider replacing them.

Older baseboard registers become less effective if their vents cease to work.  When vents get old or damaged they can leak air when the vents are closed, or in the case of metal vents they can seize up and remain in one position only.  Rust is also an issue for metal registers, and non-metal ones can break if accidentally bumped.  Condensation can cause problems with mold as well as damage surrounding materials.

What Kinds of Materials for Baseboard Registers?

Baseboard registers are available in a wide choice of materials, including metal, wood, or plastic.  Some offer fixed fins while others are adjustable.  There are high-tech registers that can be programmed to activate airflow when needed.  Some fit flush with the baseboard while others don’t.  Some of the more deluxe models have humidifiers to counteract the dryness that heating systems cause.  There are frill-free models and highly decorative ones.

Registers also run the gamut in pricing, depending on what is delivered to the customer.  The less basic the register, the more expensive it is.  The least expensive will run no more than a few dollars while fancier ones can get expensive.  A quick  trip to the local hardware store or building supply store will provide the consumer all the information needed on prices and styles.  Clerks are trained to answer most questions the homeowner might have.

Can you Install Baseboard Registers Yourself?

Should you want to replace your baseboard registers yourself, make an effort to learn all you can about replacing registers.  For instance, the size of a replacement vent is easy to figure.  It doesn’t matter about the external size of the old register.  Registers are sold according to the size of the opening itself.

If you are reluctant tackle the job yourself, locate a carpenter or handyman who can do it for a price.  Ask friends if they have used someone they can recommend, or check out the local yellow pages.  If you are not familiar with the person or their company, consult the Better Business Bureau or a referral service like Angie’s list and be sure they have a legitimate license to do the work.  If there is a relative, tap them for assistance and barter a return service.

In summary, even though baseboard registers seem simple and basic, properly maintaining them can help keep your home warmer and cooler in the proper seasons.
