How to Install a Thermostat – Easy Step by Step

1.       First you’ll have to select and purchase a new thermostat. We advise you to get a programmable one since they offer many useful features at a decent price.

2.       Next you’ll need to disconnect and remove the old thermostat. Since there are many wires through which the thermostat is connected to the system, you will have to remember the use of each of them. If you have a digital camera, it is a good idea to take a photo of the wire arrangement. Of course, you can also write down the information. Remember to also  remove the thermostat mounting plate.

3.       Install the new thermostat mounting plate. Place the mounting plate on the wall with the wires through the hole in the wall as well as through the mounting plate. Don’t worry about the wire arrangement at this point. Create two holes in the wall where you will fasten the new mounting plate and put it on.

4.       Take the sketches or the photo you made in the second step. Match all the wires to the terminal connections accordingly before tightening the terminal with the screws. Once all the wires are connected, push the excess wires right into the wall.

5.       Attach the cover on the thermostat. You will perform this step only if all the wires are connected. Turn the thermostat on. If it does not work, you may have misplaced some of the wires; therefore, that is what you should check again. If everything appears to be working, set your controls and start setting the thermostat according to your needs.

Thermostats are available at home improvement stores – especially the ones specialized toward the heating and cooling – but you might also find some models on the Internet. As it is, if these steps appear to be too complicated for you, do not hesitate to employ an electrician or heating and air specialist to install the unit.
