Concrete has been a popular choice for driveways and sidewalks for many years. There are several reasons why concrete is chosen, such as it durability, and the nice clean appearance it makes. However, concrete has to be protected against the sun, wind, rain, and snow. These elements can cause a lot of wear and tear that eats away at concrete. To avoid this, it’s recommended that a concrete sealer be used.
Snow and ice cause concrete to crack and age. Concrete absorbs water, and once the water freezes it expands the concrete. This causes concrete to become very loose and damages the appearance of the concrete. There are certain ammonium based ice melting products that are used on driveways and sidewalks to remove snow and ice. However, these products damage the surface of concrete.
When water seeps into concrete it causes deterioration, so concrete surfaces have to be water proofed so water will not seep into the pores of the surface. The best way to do this is by using a concrete sealer. There are various types of concrete sealers depending on how the concrete is being used. There is a concrete driveway sealer and a concrete floor sealer. The best concrete sealer either creates a film over the concrete surface, or penetrates and absorbs into the concrete to plug up the pores. Sealers are used on many different surfaces. For horizontal surfaces, there are sealers that protect against moisture, oil stains, dust, and road salt. For vertical surfaces, there are sealers that improve paint adhesion, and strengthen mortar joints. For surfaces that are used a lot, there are sealers that help to reduce the wear and tear of the concrete.
Some of the benefits of a concrete driveway sealer is that it helps to preserve a concrete driveway. A great advantage to using driveways sealers is that they help to beautify the driveway. The best way to check to see if your driveway needs a sealer is to pour water onto the surface. If the water soaks in, you can be sure that during the winter your are going to have trouble with your driveway. In this case, using a concrete driveway sealer would be your best option. Applying a sealer only one time does not protect your driveway, you need to check the sealer at regular intervals to ensure it’s still protecting your driveway. Most sealers need to be reapplied periodically.
