Concrete stain is a great option for people who don’t want to waste a lot of time taking care of the concrete surfaces in their homes. After a concrete is poured and set for a floor, most people prefer it be scored so that it resemble tiles, wood shapes, or stones. After the floor is scored, a concrete stain is applied. Once the stain has dried, a clear coat is added to protect the stain. If you are going to use a concrete stain, then it’s best not to score the cement. The results would be that the stain would accumulate in the score marks of the floor along with other dust and debris .
There are several different types of concrete stains, and several advantages to using each one of them. There is a concrete acid stain and a color base stain. The acid base is where the color leeches down into the concrete and permanently stains it. The color base stain adheres only to the surface of the concrete and can be changed any time you choose. Both stains are great for staining, the only difference is one is temporary while the other is permanent. There are many different colors and patterns to choose from such as tile or wood. It’s easy to do yourself, all you need is a little patience and practice. No matter which one you choose, they both need to have sealers on top of them.
An acid stain can be used on any cement surface such as driveways, walkways, bathrooms, living rooms, floors, and especially high traffic areas. However, not all types of concrete flooring are compatible with staining. It greatly depends on the condition of the floor. The age of the cement doesn’t matter, it is what condition the floor is in. The best surface for stain is a smooth surface that is reasonably new, older surfaces that are worn will not react to the stain as well. Older floors have much more character with all the flaws and imperfections, however, stain does not react well, and the results will not be as beautiful. This is especially true if the concrete aggregate has been exposed, or treated with acid in the past. A textured surface that has stamped overlays or stamped concrete is very compatible with concrete stain, and will produce a very deep, vibrant, and rich color, and will have a very realistic appearance to the surface.
