Our Farmhouse Table – The Best Part of the Day Always!

Our Farmhouse Table

It probably sounds a bit quirky, but we loved Little House on the Prairie while growing up.  Our favorite part of the show was when everyone would gather round the dinner table and discuss their day. It always made us feel good…and  we guess part of us wants to relive that pleasant memory in today’s modern, hurried world.  So, what better way to do it, than by finding a similar farmhouse table for our home!   (Yes we know its a long stretch towards reliving our childhoods…but what the heck right? )  :-)     Finding the right table for our kitchen was tough, but eventually we settled on one that wasn’t too terribly expensive and that would last us for literally dozens of years.

If you remember the farmhouse table from the show, it basically sounds exactly like it looks, which is country, rustic and inviting. The table is what brings everyone together to eat delicious food and talk about the hot topics of the day. It is the place that unites a family for a short while and that is why it is such an important piece of furniture. While the farmhouse table is most commonly found in country homes where country living is the way of life, with the various styles it can be used in any home no matter where its located. The table is known for its simplistic approach, beautiful legs and is usually large in size seating roughly 6 to 10 people.

What Types of A Farmhouse Table Are Available?

The table is often made of either oak wood or solid pine and can be found in many beautiful natural finishes. This particular type of farmhouse kitchen table can be a little more expensive than a standard kitchen table, but when you buy one can you can rest assured you are buying a timeless quality piece of furniture. When purchasing your table it is important to consider a few things. First, you want to decide on the size of the table. While bigger is always better for family meals you want to make sure that your kitchen can accommodate a larger table and chairs. If you do not have a large kitchen but still want the look of a farmhouse table then some manufacturers make smaller versions. Aside from the size, you want to think about shape. While rectangle is the most common and often purchased shape you can find them in oval or round shapes as well.

Lastly there is the color. You can find them in a variety of natural wood stains or even painted. A classic look is the top of the table painted white and the legs left in their natural wood color. This is by far my most favorite look. No matter what size, shape or color the table one of the most important features of the table is the chairs. There is no better way to dress up the table than with a set of finely detailed farmhouse chairs. Often times the chairs will match the color of the table, but you can always spruce them up with tie cushions to add a little more personality to them. As with the table, one of my personal favorite looks is a mostly white painted chair with a natural wood finish seat. With so many tables and chairs to choose from you are certain to find one to meet your needs. They vary in price depending on the size and wood species so make sure to determine your budget prior to shopping. The table and chairs can range anywhere from a little over $100 up to $800 or more.

So Where Can You Find a Farmhouse Table?

It took us a while when we were shopping online to gather a few stores that sell what we would consider reasonably priced farmhouse tables.    We thought it would be convenient for you to list a few of these places for your benefit here:

http://www.trailerparkslope.com/ – Sells all sorts of vintage furniture and really has some nice tables for sale.

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40176846 – Not exactly perfect, but CHEAP!  and it can be sanded, stained or painted.

https://www.vermontfarmtable.com/ – Ok, ok… YES we know these are expensive….but we LOVE them so much!

These are just a few sites to check out for the best in farmhouse tables.   We’re sure that there are other manufacturers out there that also sell these tables, but we didn’t have time to check out them all.   Hopefully you’ll find one of these sites spark your interest.

If per chance, none of these are good options for you, then we suggest going on a scavenger hunt in your area.  Try flea markets, antique stores, old shops (think book stores, or any type of “niche” store), craigslist, ebay, or even just put the word out among your friends.   Finding the perfect antique farmhouse table isn’t always easy, but from our point of view, its the best of times for our family.
