Safety is one the primary concerns when it comes to our home. We spend a lot of money on security alarms, locks, windows  and other related items that we think will keep our families safe.  Chimneys also provide an opportunity for our families to enjoy our home, but they also need to be safe.  A good quality flue liner ensures that any fires we have in our fireplaces or wood burning stoves stay controlled and safe. Remember, one of the leading cases of people losing their homes is due to fire. This may have been caused by several factors, one of which is neglect.  Certainly this can be caused by improperly maintained chimney flues.

I would like to share one of our friend’s experiences when they bought an old farmhouse last year. The house’s chimney has not been used for about 40 years, which of course requires a thorough inspection by a professional prior to being used again. To be extra cautious that her chimney would be safe, she got two different inspections and quotes from local contractors she found on Angie’s list .

Chimney Flue Liner Inspection

The first inspector told them that the chimney needs a tuck point, the top opening covered, the firebox rebuilt and a flue liner to be added. My friend got the second inspection by another professional, and they were told exactly the same thing minus the flue liner. The second inspector quoted about $2000 for the whole service, while the first one quoted about $5000. Seeing the price difference, my friend wasn’t sure what to think.   The bottom lined seemed to revolve around the choice to add in the chimney flue liner. Not knowing who to trust, she got online and did some deep research.   Here’s what she found out:

Since the original chimney was made out of brick, it would be certainly able to  withstand the wide range of  temperatures with regular use.    This also was factoring in whether or not there was or was not a flue liner.  However, since the chimney was said to need tuck pointing, it may mean that the mortar is weak, cracked and the chimney’s structure may not be as strong as it used to be. This meant that creosote could build up faster since there was the possibility of more down drafts into the cracks.   Based on this research, my friend called back the second inspector and asked what the real reason was that they didn’t quote out the flue liner.  She was told that it was not necessary because the chimney was originally lined with clay tiles.  These clay tiles were in great shape and had no cracks or crumbling pieces.  The second contractor further said if the chimney’s structure been in a bad shape, he would have said so and would no doubt recommend using a flue liner. My friend chose the second inspector’s advice, and did not have a flue liner installed.

Consulting More Than One Flue Liner Specialist Saves Money

Fortunately, my friend used good judgment and consulted more than one contractor.  If she hadn’t done that she would have paid nearly three thousand more dollars for a flue liner that really wasn’t necessary. Every home’s situation is different, but if you do your own due dilligence you’ll be able to discern if a flue liner is right for your fireplace chimney.

If you suspect that there is still too much moisture, place a thick stack of white towels over the spot you have just cleaned and put a heavy object on the towels to increase the absorption.

Finally, we will discuss how to remove some of the most common stains.

Another handy secret that we’ve used …and we’ve seen many carpet cleaning tips over the years…is to try to use either very warm or very cold water as you clean depending on the nature of the stain.   If you are ever in doubt, check the underside of your washing machine lid…no really… we mean it.  There you will most likely find a chart of stains and suggested water temperatures to use on your laundry.  Follow the same chart for cleaning your carpet.

Spots that come from alcoholic beverages or coffee should be very quickly diluted with the cold water. Further, absorb the excess liquid and mix one teaspoon of mild detergent, one teaspoon of white vinegar and one teaspoon of warm water. Apply this solution directly to the spot and let the carpet dry off. Finally, perform the vacuuming process very gently.  You may also find that club soda will help lift the stain quickly and efficiently too.  You’ll often find that if you ever spill food or coffee on yourself at a restaurant, that the server will offer you club soda to help get the stain out.  It works!

Regarding stains that come from blood, first absorb them as much as possible. All the other steps for this stain are the same as described previously in our other carpet cleaning tips.

Having blocked drains in your home  is one of the most common and most frustrating situations homeowners come across. Often times the blocked drains could have been prevented with a better pipe design, but even then some clogs are unavoidable.  If you use a particular drain frequently or have someone in the home with a lot of hair, then you are more likely to see your fair share of blocked drains.  Here are some tips on how to unclog those blocked drains and get your system up and running.

3 of the Most Popular Ways to Clean Blocked Drains

• The first and easiest step to take to unclog your drain is by plunging the hole with a plunger.  If the particular sink has an overflow drain hole or is a double sink, be sure to plug the hole with a wet rag before plunging.  This allows for optimum suction. Then, place your plunger directly over the drain hole and start plunging.   You may repeat this process a few times over a 5 to 10 minute time period.  With most clogs this is all you will need to do.
• Dependent on the type of clog, like hair or grease, you can try using a clog remover such as Drano to try and slowly remove the blockage. Most hair clogs are around the stopper in the stink and using a product like Drano will easily fix the problem.  The chemicals are also good to use for regular maintenance every few months.  Using this type of product will help prevent buildup by breaking down any small buildup in the pipe. One note of caution though.  If you talk to most plumbers they will discourage the use of any types of chemicals in your lines. Most of the time they will tell you that some of those solutions can weaken the PVC piping over time.  We also should mention that these chemicals are very strong and can be dangerous and harmful to your family and the environment.  For those reasons alone, we  suggest using mechanical means for removing most clogs in your blocked drains.
• If using a plunger or a clog remover does not work, you may need to use a drain snake to clear your blocked drains. It is a fairly common tool and sounds more intimidating than it really is.  A drain snake is a long and flexible wire with a corkscrew auger at the end of it. To use the drain snake, you need to remove either the cleanout plug or the P trap, depending on the type you have. Make sure to put a bucket underneath the pipes to catch the water that is in the pipes. If you have a cleanout plug, remove the plug and then put the drain snake into the pipe working it around up into the pipe to dislodge the blockage.  If you have a P trap, you will remove the trap (this is the part that makes a U) and use the drain snake to push out whatever is clogging it.  For a clogged sink with a stopper, you may even want to remove the stopper completely and push the drain snake down through the drain hole to ensure it is clear.  We use a drain snake for our own home that can be hooked up to an electric or battery powered drill.   While running the drill the auger automatically turns and “grinds” its way through the clogs.

While plumbing is not exactly new and exciting in the way of modern inventions, once in a while there are tools that pop up that make life a whole lot easier.  In addition to the above ways to clean your blocked drains, we’ve found great success using a relatively new tool on the market for clearing out sink drains.  As long as the blocked hair, or object isn’t buried deep into the drain pipe beyond this tools reach, this zip it tool works fantastic.   Here’s a close up of it and its “fish hook” like tines that grab the hair and pull it back out of the drain with relative ease.  These zip it tools are cheap too…only costing about 3 bucks each.  A great invention that we enthusiastically support!

In conclusion, most blocked drains will usually be resolved by either plunging them or using a clogging agent.  If these three methods do not clear your blocked drains, or if you are not comfortable using a drain snake, it may be time to call in a plumber.

The HVLP spray gun (abbreviated for high volume low-pressure) is a spray gun usually used for applying varnishes, stains, lacquers and other paints. The “actual” model of HVLP gun is connected to a turbine engine which drives a high amount of warm air. This occurs under low-pressure, giving the product part of its name. On the other hand, there are many spray guns that are designed in order to work with air compressors but with the different principles. These guns are called HVLP guns.
HVLP guns can be compared with the pistol-type garden hose nozzle that allows the flow of the water as the trigger is squeezed and the turning off of the water flow once it is released. In the case of the HVLP spray gun, however, there is no water.

Once it is released, the gun shoots air that is mixed with your paint or stain material. The primary idea regarding it is to avoid atomizing the material with the air by spreading it into little droplets that can be further applied to the surface in layers that are even. ( I’ve found personally that setting the air pressure regulator to approximately 19-22 PSI works best.  It provides a good level of atomization and yet doesn’t cause too much overspray.)
Before HVLP paint guns, the spray guns that used air compression did not provide the option of regulating the air pressure that comes through the gun. If there was a too much air pressure, finish problems could potentially result – including blowing large amounts of overspray or blowback as mentioned above. This amount of overspray not only wasted the material, but it also required more preparation work in order to protect the surrounding area from the paint coming from the gun. Regarding the blowback, it is a condition when the paint hits the surface very hard and leaves the surface cratered.  Think “asteroids hitting the moon” and leaving deep craters, valleys, and mountains…. only on a very tiny level. The HVLP spray gun was developed in order to replace the conventional type of compressor controlled paint gun. The regulator is the key element in what  allows the material into the atomizer at a slower rate, and by doing this the overspray and blowback are greatly reduced or even avoided. Another tip that I didn’t mention above is that it makes sense to also set your air compressor to no greater than 50 psi.   Since most HVLP guns can’t handle more than that, it makes sense to limit the air coming into the gun by adjusting the source.

The turbine inside the HVLP system is designed to equip the electric turbine engine, whose purpose is to generate filtered and warm air for the gun. This is where you can be assured of good quality since it completely eliminates the possibility that the oil or moisture that are sometimes generated by the conventional compressors are introduced into the paint. As with any type of comforter it is important to properly clean the duvet and duvet cover.  Duvets themselves should not be cleaned often because it will break down the natural filler material inside.  If you do decide to clean the duvet it will require a large washing machine and should be dried on the lowest setting possible in your dryer.  Cleaning the cover itself is a much easier process.  Depending on the material of the cover, you can simply machine wash it at home making sure to follow the labeled instructions.   Here is a handy video of  how to put the cover back onto the duvet filling material once you pull it apart for washing.

To find the single duvet that is right for you, take a look around online to see the various styles and colors.  Make sure to pay attention to the quality of the materials because some duvets on the market today are made of cheaper materials and do not last as long.  If you are going to spend the money on  quality single duvets, you want to ensure that you get one that will last you a long time to come.

At some point every home is going to need a little maintenance or repair work done to it.   Whether it is the usual household maintenance like cleaning out the gutters or repair work like fixing a pipe, there is usually something that needs to be done.  That is why it is important to have all the proper equipment on hand for when those situations arise, and one important piece of equipment to have is a folding multi purpose ladder.

I personally think having a folding multi purpose ladder should be a requirement in every home because lets face it, not all ladders are created equally. I also want to mention that having the proper ladder for each situation is not only an issue of functionality, but it is also a matter of safety.  Thousands of people are injured every year due to improper use of a ladder.  Two common situations that cause people to fall of a ladder is that they extend themselves past the edge of the ladder or they stand on the very top of the ladder because it is not tall enough.  It is hard to predict what kind of ladder you may need around the home for future projects so instead of making what you have work and risking potential injury, it is best to invest in a more versatile ladder.  So before you start that next project on the house, do yourself a favor and invest in a multi use ladder to ensure that from that project going forward you will always have the right ladder for the job.

I did a little digging on Amazon for you and have a couple of very highly rated ladders listed below for you to check out.  Both of these have free shipping (which is awesome because of the weight) and they both are reasonbly inexpensive.   The first one is about $315 and the second is just a shade under $200.    I don’t think you can go wrong with either one, although the Werner folding multi purpose ladder seems to be the more popular of the two…most likely because of price.
