Considerations For The Right Fireplace Grate

How to Choose the Right Fireplace Grate For your Fireplace

Most people do not give much thought when it comes to the type of fireplace grate they use for their fireplace, when in fact it is a very important piece of equipment.  The fireplace grate is used to keep the logs off of the bottom of the fireplace to allow air to flow through.  This allows more oxygen to reach the flames which will make it burn hotter and brighter making it a more effective heating source for your home.  There are a lot of fireplace grates to choose from and so it may seem a little overwhelming when it comes to purchasing one.  To help you through this process I am going to go over a few key things you need to keep in mind when shopping for your new fireplace grate.

Which Size of Fireplace Grate is Right?

An important factor to think about is the size of the fireplace grate. While it may seem that all grates are created equally, they are not.  Buying the wrong sire grate will hinder the performance of your fireplace. To know what size grate you need you must measure your fireplaces width and depth.  The ideal size grate should be 6” smaller than your fireplaces width and at least 3” smaller than the depth of your fireplace. It is also important to remember that the smaller the grate, the smaller the fire.

Different Materials Used in Making a Fireplace Grate

The two most commonly used materials for fireplace grates are steel and cast iron. While there is a little debate regarding which is better, the truth is you most likely will not notice the difference so either material is going to be long lasting and durable.  The main difference is that cast iron tends to retain the heat from the fire, thus producing some heat of its own. The important thing to keep in mind is not which material to choose but the weight and thickness of the grate.  The heavier and thicker the material the longer it will last.

Prices You Can Expect to Pay for a Good Quality Fireplace Grate

At the end of the day price is a factor in your decision making. You want to make sure you get the best product for the best price. You can find fireplace grates ranging from $15 up to a couple hundred dollars.  The main difference is the size and thickness of the grate.  If you do not use your fireplace that often then you could get away with buying a cheaper, less durable grate. However, if you are a frequent fireplace user you should definitely look into one that is going to last a long time.

They come in a variety of sizes and styles and are extremely important when using your fireplace. The serve many functions such as providing a better quality fire, protecting the floor of your fireplace and also make it easier to light the fire and keep it contained in one area.
