Garage door repair doesn’t have to be all that difficult, so long as you have good how-to plans. You can even take care of installation yourself if you put some effort into it! However, installation can be somewhat dangerous, so if you have a complicated garage door, you may want to consider having professionals to help you.
Manual garage doors are easier to deal with than automatic, so if you want to repair or intstall an automatic one, you’ll need to make sure you have all the necessary parts and a good DIY guide. This is because garage door springs and parts are also needed along with the door itself. You might also need to replace the motor if the door is heavy!
In addition to looking over the basic guidelines, you should also carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting anything. While you should try to take care of the repair as soon as possible, you shouldn’t rush into the process. You need to learn garage door repair and installation the right way so that you’ll do it properly and not get hurt. Indeed, accidents can arise if you fail to repair your door the right way.
On top of everything else, if you don’t do a good enough job, your garage entry point will not look visually pleasing! Why? Because the garage door will deteriorate if you don’t take good care of it. You should do everything you possibly can to ensure it is always in good condition. Not fixing it correctly can be just as bad—if not worse—as not repairing it all! You’ll only make things worse if you mess up.
The very first thing you need to do is identify the problem. Does it get stuck whenever you try to open or close it? Does it fall whenever you try to open it? Does it not open at all? Whatever the problem may be, you need to know what type of garage door parts to get. Of course, the problem might not be all that bad. If, for instance, the door sticks, you might just have to reprogram or fix the opener. You could also try cleaning the tracks to see if that’ll help. If not, then you’ll probably have to get new garage door rollers.
If your garage door is truly messed up, though, then you’ll need to get a good guide. Find out what garage door parts you will need in order to properly fix the problem. Also, don’t forget that garage door installation can be difficult at times, so if you don’t have enough confidence in yourself, you should consider hiring someone to assist you
Garage door problems are a huge inconvenience! To avoid problems, I recommend proper garage door maintenance. If you maintain the hardware and springs of your garage door, it will help keep it working for years to come. Also, your garage door springs must be adjusted and lubricated. It is also important to remember that all cables, levers, etc. should have good connections.
I agree, good How-To instructions are the key. For example, if one of your garage door hinges is broken, it might seem like an easy fix. In most cases, it will be. However, you need to be sure to buy the correct replacement hinge, and they are not all the same.
Along each side of the garage door there are brackets and hinges. The item at the bottom is called a “lift bracket” and it is attached to the garage door’s lift cable and spring. When the garage door is closed, the spring and cable are under high tension, read: DANGER. The tension must be relieved by raising and propping the door open BEFORE attempting to remove the bracket.
Next up from the bottom is the first hinge known as #1. As you move up toward the top of the door, the next hinge is #2, then #3, etc., to the top bracket called the “roller carrier.” All hinges in the center section of the door (away from the sides) use hinge #1.
This post is not meant to be an instructional post, but an encouragement to get prepared before getting started. I believe in Do-It-Yourself repairs, as long as they are done correctly and safely. Please do your homework and get help if you need it.
Be well,
Pat
