You Can Remove Wallpaper Fast
If you are in the process of renovating your house, you might be worried about how much money you need to spend on everything that needs to be done. While seeking professional help to do the remodeling is ideal, it is also best to make a list of all the things that you can do yourself. This way, you wouldn’t have to purchase new furniture or hire a licensed professional to do something that you can do yourself. Doing it yourself will also ensure that the job gets done right as well as give you more control over the materials you will be using. Not to mention the fact, that when faced with daunting tasks at hand, the sense of accomplishment you feel from being handy and actually getting “stuff” done really is worth the effort. So what’s one easy task that anyone can accomplish themselves when remodeling a room? Remove wallpaper is the answer. If you have been dealing with a room that has wallpaper spread from floor to ceiling, do not fear, its not as bad as you think to get it taken off, repair the walls, do minor drywall work (if necessary), and then apply some beautiful paint to the surface. In a short weekend, you can make this happen.
Here are a few quick and helpful tips on how to remove wallpaper yourself:
First, check to see if you have strippable wallpaper, which is a kind of wallpaper that peels right off. If it is the strippable kind, soak a sponge in hot water then scrub it onto the wallpaper to soften it. Most likely you aren’t going to get lucky on this one though. If the wallpaper has been up since the 70′s or 80′s, chances are you are not going to be able to just wet it and peel.
Remove Wallpaper with the Paper Tiger
One VERY useful tool in preparing the walls for allowing you to remove wallpaper yourself is called the Paper Tiger. I’ve linked to the Amazon sales page if you want to check out what it looks like. Essentially this little tool creates hundreds of little tears in the wallpaper. It scores the surface of the paper which allows either steam, hot water, or wallpaper remover solution to soak into the paper. To use this tool, you place it flat onto the wall and roll it back and forth. It couldn’t be easier, although I’ll admit that it takes a small bit of coordination to use it at first. This is because the roller that has the sharp teeth on it is a multi-directional wheel and can go in any direction.
Once the wall has been scored with the wallpaper removal tool, and you have used a wallpaper steamer or a sponge and hot water solution, use a paint spatula and scrape off as much paper as you can. The photo above shows a nice scraper tool that I’ve personally used before and its easy to grip and apply the right force. When scraping, you DO want to be careful not to dig into the drywall. If you push too hard, you’ll end up gouging the wall and will need to patch the drywall later on. If you’ve scraped as much as you can, you may need to consider more soaking time.
To further loosen the paper, you may want to consider a natural solution that can be made by using a gallon of hot water with a cup of vinegar. Removing wallpaper with vinegar is an old trick my Mom showed me and it still works well.
The following are simple steps on how to remove wallpaper that is not easily strippable:
First use the Paper Tiger tool (see above) and score the surface of the wallpaper. Do only a 6 to 8 foot section at atime to make things go smoother. Once you’ve scored the paper, then, you need to fill a bucket with very hot water and mix in special wallpaper remover, fabric softener, and baking soda. This solution is a good and quick wallpaper removal home remedy. Using a paint roller, cover the walls with the solution twice then leave it alone for about fifteen or twenty minutes. Next, scrape off the paper using a paint spatula and try to strip off as much as you can. Repeat as many times as necessary and remember to be careful to avoid damaging the drywall.
Once the wallpaper is removed, next you’ll want to remove any residue. Just use a paint roller to coat the walls with the remaining solution. Rinse the walls with a mixture of a cup of vinegar and a gallon of water.
While it does take a little bit of patience and you may want to invest in a few small tools, removing wallpaper from walls isn’t that difficult. It goes even faster with an extra helping hand from a friend or your kids. In summary, we hope these simple steps on how to remove wallpaper help you create a new look for your walls and save a lot of money at the same time.
