Manageable Small Kitchen Design

Do you live in a small apartment? Cooking in a cramped kitchen can be difficult, especially when your small kitchen design isn’t particularly useful for multi-course meals and difficult deserts. We’ve all lived in a shoebox once or twice, and while we’ve done our best to make do with the sometimes minimal kitchens that are provided, we’ve all wished for the space and counter area of a larger kitchen. Let’s face it — city dwellers often have it hard on the cooking front, and with kitchen design favoring the large and spacious, it’s hard to see how you can turn your apartment into a cooking wonderland.

Thankfully, it’s not impossible. Small kitchen design has come a long way in the last couple of decades, largely thanks to the huge boom in apartment prices and amount of professionals living in them. If you’re an urban liver, your kitchen design doesn’t have to mean minimal cooking productivity. By using some innovative small kitchen design ideas you can boost your cooking speed, prepare more difficult dishes, and easily excel in a kitchen half the size of the one in a large suburban home.small-kitchen-design

It starts with minimalism, especially in appliances. Small kitchen design is all about making the most of available space, and if you’ve got appliances around taking up that space it can be very difficult to truly make the most of it. Think about what you do and don’t need. Do you really need that microwave there? If you’re never reheating food, defrosting frozen products or cooking microwave meals, get rid of it. You don’t necessarily need to throw it out, but it’s easy to store it out of the way and only ever bring it back when you need it. Sure, it’ll cost you a bit of time, but you’ll find that the extra bench space is worth the trade-off.

Small kitchen appliance are another area to innovate in. Do you really need those four gas burners on your stove top? For most of us, it’s unlikely that we’ll be preparing four things at once often, and with most dishes it’s very easy to manage cooking time and use storage pots. If you think you can sacrifice the stove space, do so. Every inch that disappears from your stove is another that can be used for preparing food, so don’t think that you can’t get rid of enough.

These small changes can make or break your kitchen, but when managed well they can easily double your preparation space. Focus on what you don’t need, strategically eliminate, and watch as your kitchen moves from micro-nuisance to ultra-useful.
