I’ve been redesigning my home before setting forth on some major renovations. My biggest problem area is my living room. It’s a great room style, with an upper loft and a hideous staircase running up the back wall, which is enclosed with drywall, and just is altogether an eyesore. This hideous piece is one of the few things left from the original 1980s construction.
Coming up with a great redesign has been such a challenge, it seemed there was no way to move the stairs from where they are, and rebuilding them wouldn’t solve the problem of them being along the back wall, taking up all that space. The rest of our house has a very modern feel to it, open and airy, except for this spot.
When a good friend suggested installing a spiral staircase kit, I must admit that at first I was unsure. The image that came immediately to my mind was a scene out of The Music Man, featuring the spiral staircase in the library, old painted wrought iron. That really didn’t fit with the modern style the rest of my house has. But some research quickly turned up some staircase kits that would flow perfectly with the design of the rest of the home.
After reading through many reviews, and watching installation videos, I know this will be a snap to put up. A handy do-it-yourselfer could easily take on this project if they use a staircase kit – there is no leveling and angling to do like standard stairs, it just snaps together like a set of legos. The customizable kits make it so easy to match your style; I was able to find some that were perfect, featuring light colored beechwood with steel supports that are available in white or black enamel, or a grey powder coating.
What really sold me was the availability of a new railing for my loft to match the stairs, adding flow to the whole loft area and opening it up more. I cannot wait for renovations to get moving, I think my living room will feel so open and the energy will flow so well and I’m excited to gain use of that whole wall – now I will just need to come up with some beautiful art for that wall! Spiral stairs are perfect for my home: space saving, with pleasant form, and function. What more could I ask for?
