The selection of inflatable mattresses has grown significantly in the past several years. So much so, that shopping for an inflatable mattress can get overwhelming. The following provides some guidelines to consider when shopping.
First, consider the primary use of the air mattress. This is important because how the mattress will be used should impact your choice dramatically. For example, a model that you will use when camping has different requirements than a model that will be used in a home setting. In some instances, the inflatable air mattress may have several different usages, for example, when the kids have sleepovers at the house as well as the yearly camping trip. In this case, searching for a mattress that meets both of these needs is critical, but focusing on the primary need will be the most beneficial and will serve your purposes much better in the long run.
Remember, a good quality mattress can last 10 years or longer if its cared for properly and not abused. One friend of ours has had her aerobed inflatable mattress for over 12 years! We actually have borrowed it as an extra sleeping spot for my dad several times when both sets of our parents are in visiting the kids. He’s a snorer and makes a lot of noise…it works out much better to give him his own mattress and spare room. As for our friends’ aerobed, I’d say we tend to use the mattress more than she does. As a side note, we always put a blanket or comforter down on our floor first, then blow up the mattress and put it on top. It seems to “cushion” the mattress a little better and thankfully we’ve never had anything pierce or pop it.
Another great point to consider when shopping for inflatable matresses is to pay close attention to the accessories that come with it. Most will come with the required air pump, but definitely verify this before buying. After all, you don’t want to buy it and think is a great deal only to find out you have to buy a special pump later…. or worse yet, you have to spend half the night blowing it up manually with your own breath. I did that a few times and it near caused me to pass out. Also, most likely the inflatable mattress that you purchase will not come with a set of nice sheets, so do consider that when calculating the overall price. Too, while these types of blow up mattresses are quite sturdy, if you plan on doing a lot of camping, then consider buying a patch kit as well just in case you need it. It’s better to have one than not.
When you’re looking at the sizes of mattresses, it usually is not a major issue to match sheet sets or blankets with them. Most inflatable mattresses come in a queen size or a double mattress and the standard regular bed type queen sheets fit fine. Some twin-sized models are available, primarily for camping. However, if the individual using the inflatable mattress is quite tall, it may be worth searching for a larger mattress. These are not easy to find and will most likely cost more, but it could have a significant impact on comfort.
Finally, I personally ignore a lot of the additional features that some models tout. In most cases, the features are either not necessary or available on all the different inflatable mattresses which makes price comparisons difficult and confusing. I mean seriously, do you REALLY need the reading light attachment? Most likely not. Just keep your shopping simple and buy a quality air mattress, but not one that has a bunch of nonsense frills on it.
In summary, inflatable air mattresses can serve a variety of purposes and I have personally found them to be a worthwhile purchase. However, they also are not designed to have the long term comfort or durability of regular mattresses. Following the guidelines above will hopefully help you in purchasing your air mattress for short term use such as camping or house guests.
