People may be more familiar with a pool cleaner than the pool skimmer, but they are no less important to the cleanliness of your pool. The basic function of a pool skimmer is to remove surface debris from the pool that not only is unsightly but may introduce bacteria and algae to the pool. Even the use of a pool cover when the pool is not in use will not completely remove the need for a skimmer as flies and leaves may fall into the water during use.
There are two main types of pool skimmers-one of which is built into the wall of the pool and the other which floats on the surface of the pool. They work in similar ways, pulling water in at the level of the surface of the pool and thus also pulling in whatever is sitting on the surface of the pool. Pool skimmers are all made with the same basic design in mind, at least as far as their function is concerned. They consist of a pump and entry aperture to draw in water, an exit for the cleaned water, a basket or bag to collect the large debris that has been taken from the surface of the water, and a filter to prevent blockages to the pump.
The pool skimmer basket serves to collect the debris that has been gathered from the surface of the water. A pool skimmer cover helps to prevent leaves and other debris falling directly into the unit, where they may cause a blockage in the pump by bypassing the filter or skimmer basket.
Floating pool skimmers may hook over the edge of the pool and remain fixed in a stationary position. These are most suited to smaller pools as they must be able to circulate the water sufficiently to skim it all, and larger pools will make this task more difficult. They may also be free floating and move around the pool as the skimmer is in use.
A through the wall pool skimmer is more likely to be used in larger pools, both and above and in ground. Their intake may be small or up to a couple of feet if the pool is large enough to require it and they would generally be larger than a skimmer for an above ground pool.
Generally it is possible to buy replacement pool skimmer parts, and these are not difficult to replace, with many models being user serviceable. The manufacturer is often the best place to find the parts that you need, or at least to find information on alternative sources. I’ve personally found that many specialty pool stores online will carry the exact parts you need at very reasonble prices. Not to mention that purchasing online can usually save you money on sales tax and usually any associated shipping costs are also most likely free.
