Which Goose Down Duvet is Better? – Hungarian or Siberian ?

Types of Goose Down Duvet

Many people think about buying a goose down duvet for a variety of reasons, but it is a difficult decision.  A quilt, comforter, blanket, or bed set can already be expensive, so why increase the cost even more with a cover? There are some significant benefits to goose down duvets. When looking, remember that there are a few different types of down and make sure you know what to look for. Also keep in mind that washing and drying any goose down may require special steps, equipment, or a trip to a dry cleaner. Duvets made from down may not be right for everyone but with a little research you can decide if you want a one and what to look for.

Why would you even consider a goose down duvet?  There are many benefits to covering that comforter.  High quality goose down duvets are light weight, add a lot of insulation, and durable. The goose down is lighter than many other materials and is great at keeping in heat. The duvets are also far more durable that most comforters. They are less likely to tear, rip, or wear out, and can be easier to clean in case of stains. Many duvets are also water proof, meaning spills are less likely to soak through to the comforter, sheet, or other bedding.

Hungarian Goose Down Duvet

There are two types of goose down used in most duvets, Hungarian and Siberian. Hungarian goose down duvets are considered to be higher quality. They are generally lighter weight and offer better insulation due the fact that Hungarian goose down feathers have a longer filament. This means there are more fibers which enable larger insulating clouds to be created when the duvet is produced.

Siberian Goose Down Duvet

Siberian goose down can vary a lot in quality. This is because Siberian goose down is actually a trade name. Meaning lower quality down may actually have the same name. It is still a step up from standard white goose down but often below Hungarian goose down duvets.

As great as goose down duvets are they are impossible to wash, right? Wrong. In fact, there are a few steps to make it possible to wash even high quality goose down duvets without having to worry. First be sure to always use cold water. Never use fabric softener and use as little laundry detergent as possible. Be sure to use enough water that the duvet is completely soaked and does not balloon up at all. When drying the duvet, use cold air. It works best to use a larger dryer, preferably industrial sized similar to the ones used at laundromats. One trick to help the duvets dry properly is to throw a tennis ball or two into the dryer. This will help the duvet dry more evenly and avoid and “lumping” that can occur.

A high quality goose down duvet can be an expensive investment. But their durability means they may last longer than any comforter could. They offer great insulation without adding too much weight and can prevent spills from ruining an entire bedding set with stains. When searching for a goose down duvet remember to ask if it is made of Hungarian or Siberian goose down. If it is Siberian, remember that you often get what you pay for. A cheaper duvet may mean it is lower quality down. And remember that even though you it does take some special care to wash a goose down duvet, it is possible to do it at home without having to go to a dry cleaner or even a laundromat in most cases. If you enjoy durable, warm bedding that will last for years consider a goose down duvet.
